French1900–195515 works

Yves Tanguy (1900–1955) was a French-born Surrealist painter, born in Paris. He began painting around 1924 after seeing a work by Giorgio de Chirico and soon joined André Breton's circle of Surrealists. His first solo exhibition was held in Paris in 1927. Tanguy is known for dreamlike, abstract landscapes in a limited palette, where smooth, bone-like or boulder-like forms are scattered across a vast, empty space under an indistinct horizon. Well-known paintings include Mama, Papa Is Wounded! (1927), The Look of Amber (1929), Lingering Day (1937) and The Furniture of Time (1939). A retrospective was held in London in 1938 at Peggy Guggenheim's gallery, Guggenheim Jeune. In 1939 he moved to the United States with the painter Kay Sage, whom he married in 1940, and they settled in Woodbury, Connecticut. He became a US citizen in 1948. Tanguy died of a stroke in Woodbury in January 1955, aged 55. His later works include The Invisibles (1951) and Multiplication of the Arcs (1954).
