About the artwork
Jacob van der Ulft is the artist behind "Italian marketplace", dated 1650 - 1689. Historical background, 1650 - 1689: In Japan the Edo period began in 1603, and in China the Qing dynasty took power in 1644, both bringing new patrons and styles. In the Dutch Republic, a prosperous middle-class market supported landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and scenes of daily life painted at a modest scale for the home. The catalogue places it in Landscape. The format is square. Background on Landscape: Landscape became an independent genre in European painting in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, while in East Asia it had long been central to ink painting. The invention of paint in tubes in the 1840s made it easier to work outdoors, and landscape became a main subject of Romanticism, Realism, and Impressionism.
"Italian marketplace" is shown in the onlly.art catalogue for reference and browsing. A square format is flexible and works well on its own or as part of a grid on a gallery wall. Landscape scenes add depth and a sense of air to the room, helping the space feel more open and working especially well above a sofa, console, or desk. Browsing works by the same artist, or from the same period, is a good way to compare styles before choosing what suits your space.
