About the artwork
"An Old Woman by a Window" (1628 – 1795) is a work by Gerrit Dou. Landscape, a short history: Painters have used landscape to study light, weather, season, and the relation between people and place. The invention of paint in tubes in the 1840s made it easier to work outdoors, and landscape became a main subject of Romanticism, Realism, and Impressionism. Context for 1628 – 1795: In the Dutch Republic, a prosperous middle-class market supported landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and scenes of daily life painted at a modest scale for the home. The seventeenth century is the age of the Baroque, which favoured dramatic light, movement, and strong emotion in the work of painters in Italy, Spain, and Flanders. It is listed in the Landscape collection. The image is in landscape orientation.
