About the artwork
Edgar Degas is the artist behind "Sheet of Studies and Sketches", dated 1858. About the period around 1858: The first half of the nineteenth century moved from Neoclassicism to Romanticism, which placed emotion, nature, and the sublime at the centre of painting. The invention of lithography around 1796 and its spread in these decades made printed images cheaper and more varied. It is listed in the Drawings collection. The image is in portrait orientation. Drawings, a short history: Drawings range from quick preparatory sketches to finished works in pen, chalk, charcoal, graphite, or wash. Because line carries so much of the effect, drawings tend to reward close looking at the quality of the mark.
