About the artwork
Johannes Bosboom is the artist behind "Gezicht in de Ridderstraat te Hattem", dated 1861. Landscape in brief: Painters have used landscape to study light, weather, season, and the relation between people and place. Landscape became an independent genre in European painting in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, while in East Asia it had long been central to ink painting. Context for 1861: Japanese prints reached Europe in large numbers and influenced many artists, while photography changed what painting needed to do. In the 1890s, colour lithography and Art Nouveau made the illustrated poster a celebrated art form. It is listed in the Landscape collection. The image is in portrait orientation.
"Gezicht in de Ridderstraat te Hattem" is shown in the onlly.art catalogue for reference and browsing. A portrait format suits narrow wall spaces, hallways, and the area beside a door or window. Landscape scenes add depth and a sense of air to the room, helping the space feel more open and working especially well above a sofa, console, or desk. Browsing works by the same artist, or from the same period, is a good way to compare styles before choosing what suits your space.
