Kanbara (1855)

Dated 1855, "Kanbara" is an artwork by Utagawa Hiroshige. Landscape in brief: Landscape became an independent genre in European painting in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, while in East Asia it had long been central to ink painting. The invention of paint in tubes in the 1840s made it easier to work outdoors, and landscape became a main subject of Romanticism, Realism, and Impressionism. Context for 1855: The invention of lithography around 1796 and its spread in these decades made printed images cheaper and more varied.
