Automne (1951)

Dated 1951, "Automne" is an artwork by Jules Cavaillès. Background on Still Life: Later artists, including Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso, used humble still-life subjects to test ideas about space and form. Dutch vanitas paintings used objects such as skulls, candles, and wilting flowers to remind viewers that time passes. Historical background, 1951: The range of materials widened to include acrylic paint, screen printing, and mixed media. After 1945 the centre of Western art activity shifted to New York, where Abstract Expressionism was followed by Pop art, Minimalism, and Conceptual art. It is listed in the Still Life collection. The image is in landscape orientation.

A landscape format suits wide, low wall spaces such as the stretch above a bed, mantel, or sideboard. If you are unsure about size, measure the wall first, then pick a frame whose proportions follow the image. Choosing a standard frame size and printing to fit it often saves the cost of custom framing. Screens and printers render colour differently, so a small test print is a sensible way to check tones before committing to a large size. Matte and fine-art papers reduce glare in bright rooms, while glossy papers give stronger contrast and deeper blacks.
