ABOUT THE ARTWORK

"Apollo Seated on Clouds, Two Figures at Left" (1696–1770) is a work by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Context for 1696–1770: The seventeenth century is the age of the Baroque, which favoured dramatic light, movement, and strong emotion in the work of painters in Italy, Spain, and Flanders. In the Dutch Republic, a prosperous middle-class market supported landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and scenes of daily life painted at a modest scale for the home. Drawings, a short history: Drawings range from quick preparatory sketches to finished works in pen, chalk, charcoal, graphite, or wash. Because line carries so much of the effect, drawings tend to reward close looking at the quality of the mark. It is listed in the Drawings collection. The image is in square orientation.

On onlly.art "Apollo Seated on Clouds, Two Figures at Left" is sold as a digital download (Digital JPEG + PDF files, 300 DPI). The files are delivered by email after payment, so nothing is shipped: you print locally, choosing the paper, size, and frame yourself. A square format is flexible and works well on its own or as part of a grid on a gallery wall. Before printing, compare the proportions of the file with your frame so that nothing important is cropped. Hang the print away from direct sunlight, which over the years can fade any printed colour. Choosing a standard frame size and printing to fit it often saves the cost of custom framing. Matte and fine-art papers reduce glare in bright rooms, while glossy papers give stronger contrast and deeper blacks.
