Alfred Sisley

French1840–1899143 works

Alfred Sisley (1839–1899) was an Impressionist landscape painter, born in Paris to British parents and a British national all his life. From 1862 he studied under Charles Gleyre, where he met Bazille, Monet and Renoir. Sisley worked outdoors more consistently than most of his circle and concentrated almost entirely on landscape: the Seine at Argenteuil and Bougival, the roads and villages near Louveciennes, and, from 1880, the countryside around Moret-sur-Loing. His paintings of the Thames near Hampton Court, made in 1874, are among his best known. His father's business failed in 1870, and he lived modestly for the rest of his life, selling few works at good prices. He exhibited with the Impressionists. Sisley painted around nine hundred oils, including a series on the church at Moret. He applied for French citizenship in 1898 and was refused, and he died at Moret-sur-Loing in January 1899.
