The featured selection is intentionally bounded and diverse: it is a way into the archive, not a claim that these are the most important works or a complete scholarly catalogue.

Illustration is a broad historical description, not a guarantee of one medium or use. A record may document a printed plate, a book or magazine image, a caricature, a decorative design, an illustrated scene or another image-based work. Date labels and creator information are supplied only where the current catalogue records contain them. The index therefore supports comparison and discovery, while the linked artwork page remains the right place to inspect the information attached to a particular record.

The index deliberately reuses established public artwork and artist routes instead of generating new combinations of filters.
